What is an AI Visibility Score?

Apr 22, 2026 4 min read Glossary, GEO

An AI Visibility Score is the percentage of AI queries relevant to your category where your brand appears in the generated answer. A score of 70% means your brand appears in 70 out of 100 relevant prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity.

Your Visibility Score is your AI presence in a single number. It combines citation rate across all four LLMs and all relevant query types — brand, category, and comparison queries — into one benchmark you can track week over week.

How Rankio calculates your Visibility Score

Rankio builds a query battery of 100–500 prompts relevant to your category — covering branded queries ("[your brand] reviews"), category queries ("best GEO tool"), use-case queries ("how to track AI citations"), and comparison queries ("[your brand] vs [competitor]").

Each prompt is run across all four LLMs. Your Visibility Score = (prompts where you appear) ÷ (total prompts) × 100. The score is recalculated weekly so you can track the impact of content changes.

How to use your Visibility Score

Your Visibility Score is the starting point for every GEO workflow in Rankio. Low-scoring query clusters point to content gaps. Queries where you appear but with low sentiment point to messaging issues. Queries where competitors appear and you don't reveal the specific pages you need to build or improve.

Frequently asked questions

No. Domain rating (Ahrefs, Moz) measures backlink authority for Google SEO. A Visibility Score measures AI citation frequency — a completely different signal that correlates with content structure, entity clarity, and topical coverage, not backlink count.
Rankio recalculates weekly. Significant content updates typically affect scores within 2–4 weeks as LLMs re-index or update their retrieval context. Structured data changes (schema, JSON-LD) can have faster effects.
Yes — and this is common. Google and AI models use different signals. A site with high PageRank but thin, unstructured content often has poor AI citations. GEO addresses the content structure gap that causes this discrepancy.
Rankio's query battery covers: brand queries, category informational queries, category commercial queries, use-case queries, comparison queries, and negative-intent queries. The exact battery is customised per client based on their competitive landscape.
